What actually costs money
Language models charge per token, the small chunks of text they read and write. Long contexts, tool loops and higher reasoning effort all use more tokens. Browser sandboxes, image generation and voice add their own costs on top.
Credits as a measured unit
A credit system is only fair if credits track measured cost. In Versabot one credit equals $0.01 of usage, calculated from actual token and provider costs, including fractional credits. Costly runs reserve credits first and return what they don't use.
When bring-your-own-key makes sense
With BYOK you add your own model provider key, and LLM usage is billed by the provider directly. It makes sense when you already have negotiated rates, need usage on your own account for compliance, or run high volumes. A good BYOK setup never silently falls back to the platform's key when yours fails.
- You already pay a model provider directly.
- Clients require usage on your account.
- High-volume work where pass-through pricing matters.
What BYOK doesn't cover
Your key pays for the model. Sandboxed browsers, image generation, voice and other paid tools are still metered by the platform.
Pricing AI work to clients
Because each run shows its measured cost, agencies can bill a transparent margin, include a usage allowance in retainers, or pass costs through at cost with BYOK.
